Writings from Saudi: An Interview with Mohammed Hasan Alwan

Mohammed Hasan Alwan is a Saudi author born in 1979 who has published three novels. He received an MBA from the University of Portland (USA) in 2008 and today lives in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Last year, Alwan joined fellow Beirut39 writers Mansoura Ez-Edine, Mohammed Salah Al-Azab, Mansour Souwaim, and Kamel Riahi in what is said to be the first international writer’s workshop for Arab fiction organized by the International Prize for Arab Fiction.

Another Beirut39 writer who went from business school to writing! Are you a full-time writer or do you maintain some contact with the ‘other side of the world’?

I am not a full-time writer although I wish I could be. This, however, does not mean that I don’t enjoy my non-writing career. The diverse of disciplines that we pursue in our education and career offer a rich perspective of life. The more angles you view life from, the more likely you are to cultivate universality and cohesiveness in your work of art.

Statistics was written in 2006. The narrator formulates quite the timeline and predicts the death of his father, mother, brothers, and himself – all according to quantitative statistics. Yet he is more concerned, or preoccupied, about a sustainable inheritance and how the family would react to his deviations from family/social traditions. You went to business school but you are a writer – how did your family react to this ‘blasphemy’?

I will have to say that the way I pursue my intellectual life is somehow inconsistent with my family tradition. I grew up in a conservative house that has become increasingly religious over time. Therefore, I had to attune culturally sensitive social skills to preserve my freedom of thought and expression without fracturing familial bonds. Such struggles are very common in Saudi Arabia at its current transitional period, or milestone. Those societal shifts are first observed by writers and later experienced by the wider society.

I lived in Saudi for two years but I do not remember anything. Often times, I have to study old family photographs to conjure a sentiment or two – but it all seems so distant. How would you look at Saudi Arabia from a distance?

To acquire an accurate description of a country, don’t ask a local citizen, his views are likely to be distorted by a personal history of accumulated emotions and experiences. You cannot analyze the system from within. I owe a large part of my understanding of Saudi Arabia to my experience living abroad. Saudi Arabia is going through a transitional period on many levels; it is evolving through the fastest paced change that a country could peacefully experience.

Haneef from Glasgow is a somber, but beautiful, story about a Pakistani driver and his relationship with the family he worked for in Riyadh. There are, of course, sentiments of racism toward imported laborers and servants in Arab countries, and you show this at the very end with two simple words. But then you also show compassion and friendship. In Saudi, how often do you come across human connections like this?

It is inevitable that imported laborers who constitute 25 percent of Saudi society would have variable levels of exposure and interaction to the communities they work for/with. Relationships are prone to vary in strength and compatibility. Prejudices, educational and economic levels, and cultural background play a big role in shaping connections.

The novel in Saudi today is changing. There is recognition, and more and more cultural initiatives springing in the Gulf – be it writers’ workshops, literature festivals, book publishers and distributors, etc. This is good for you, no?

Yes indeed. Writing is like any other pursuit in life, it needs incentives in order to flourish. Recognition is a good incentive. Literary events serve as a mean to reposition writing in the list of priorities. Laying a platform for writing and the arts, in general, is direly needed in order for these forms to resume their role in nurturing the spiritual growth of civilization.

Will this be your first time in Beirut? What do you anticipate from the Beirut39 Festival?

This will actually be my second time in Beirut. Public events usually make me anxious, but I am hopeful that things will run smooth. So far, the organizers were swift in coordinating and communicating all the arrangements, and I look forward to joining my fellow writers at the festival.

محمد حسن علوان, كاتب سعودي من مواليد عام 1979, أصدر حتى الآن ثلاث روايات. كما و قد حصل على شهادة الماجستير في التجارة من جامعة بورتلاند في العام 2008. يعيش الكاتب حاليا في الرياض. في العام الماضي شارك علوان مع آخرين (من بينهم مشتركين حاليين لمهرجان بيروت39 و هم منصورة عز الدّين, محمد صلاح العزب, منصور الصويم, و كمال الرياحي) في حدث قيل بأنه الاول من نوعه: ورشة عمل كتاب الرواية العربية العالميون و التي نظمتها الجائزة العالمية للرواية العربية.

أنت أيضا أحد مشتركي مهرجان بيرون39 للأدب الذين تحولوا من التجارة للأدب! هل أنت كاتب متفرغ؟ أم أنك لم تفك إرتباطك مع المساق الآخر؟

لست متفرغا للكتابة تماما, مع أنني اتمنى لو أنني أفعل. لا يعني هذا بأنني لا أحب عملي الحالي, فإن لإختلاف المسارات التى نتبعها في حياتنا و في علمنا ما يثري منظورنا الحيوي. كلما إزدادت الزوايا التي نرى من خلالها الاشياء, كلما حققنا شمولية أكبر و تماسكا أعظم في أعمالنا الفنية.

كتبت إحصاء في العام 2006 و فيها, يكوّن الراوي جدولا زمنيا للأحداث يتنبا فيه بموت والده, والدته, إخوته, و حتى نفسه. و جميع التنبؤات ترتكز على إحصاءيات كمّية. و لكن ما يؤرقه هو "الإرث" الذي سيرثه من العائلة و كيفية تلقي العائلة لإبنها بسبب طيشه و إنحرافه عن النهج التقليدي للعائلة و إبتعاده عن نصائحهم له. عن نفسك, درست التجارة و لكنك كاتب, كيف كان تقبل عائلتك لهذا الواقع؟

عليّ الإعتراف بأن الأسلوب الذي إتبعته في حياتي الفكرية يختلف تقريبا عمّا هو متعارف عليه في عائلتي. كبرت في جوّ بيتي لعائلة محافظة إزداد تمسكها بالدين مع مرور الوقت. لذا كان علي تكييف مهارات إجتماعية للحفاظ على حريتي الفكرية و التعبيرية من دون التسبب بتكسر روابطي العائلية. النضالات من هذا النوع شائعة في السعودية في زمنها الإنتقالي الحالي أو (زمن العلامات الفارقة).

عشت في السعودية لمدة عامين و لا أذكر شيئا من تلك الفترة. أحيانا, عليّ أن أتفحص صورا فوتوغرافية قديمة لأستجمع ذكرى أو إثنتين. كيف ترى السعودية عن بعد؟

لكي تتمكني من بناء صورة صادقة لمكان ما, لا تسألي أهل المكان لأن راي إبن البلد سيكون محرِّفا للواقع بحكم تاريخه الشخصي و تراكمات الذكريات و الأحاسيس عنده. لا يمكنك الحكم على نظام ما من الداخل. كان لسكناي في الخارج الفضل الأكبر في فهم ماهية السعودية العربية. تمر السعودية حاليا بفترة إنتقالية على أصعدة مختلفة: إنها تمر في حالة تطور هي الأسرع التي يمكن لأي دولة أن تمر بها سلميا.

حنيف من جلاسكو, قصة حزينة جميلة و تحكي عن السائق الباكستاني و علاقته بالعائلة التي عمل لديها في الرياض. هنالك بالطبع مشاعر عنصرية ضد العمالة المجتلبة في الدول العربية, و قد دللت انت على ذلك بعبارتين صغيرتين في نهاية القصة, كما انك بيّنت الشعور بالتعاطف و الصداقة في نفس الوقت. كم مرة تمر في مثل هذا الخليط من المشاعر في السعودية؟

لا مناص من ذلك. فالخمسة و العشرون بالمئة من المجتمع السعودي و المكون للعمالة المجتلبة لديها مستويات مختلفة من التفاعل و الإحتكاك بالمجتمعات التي يعملون لديها او معها. العلاقات عرضة للتفاوت في قوتها أو توافقها. التحيز و المستويات العلمية و الإقتصادية و الخلفية الثقافية تلعب دورا مهما في تشكيل عملية التواصل.

الرواية السعودية في تغير, هنالك تقدير للكاتب و الكثير الكثير من المبادرات الثقافية في دول الخليج: ورش عمل أدبية, مهرجانات أدبية, ناشري و موزعي كتب, الخ. هل الأمر مفيد بالنسبة لك؟

بكل تأكيد. الكتابة مثلها مثل اي سعي آخر في الحياة. فهي بحاجة الى الحافز لتزدهر. التقدير أحد هذه الحوافز. أما الأحداث الأدبية فهي ما يعيد ترتيب عملية الكتابة الى قائمة الاولويات. بشكل عام, وضع منبر للكتابة و الفنون يفي بأمسّ حاجات هذه الفنون لمتابعة تغذية الروح الحضارية.

هل هذه هي المرة الاولى لك في بيروت؟ ما هي توقعاتك بخصوص مهرجان بيروت39؟

في الواقع ستكون هذه زيارتي الثانية لبيروت. المناسبات العامة تربكني عادة, و مع ذلك آمل بان يمر كل شيء على ما يرام. حتى الآن, قام المنظمون بالتواصل و توصيل المعلومات و الترتيبات بدقة و سرعة, على أمل بان ألتقي رفاقي الكتاب في المهرجان
