Writings from Lebanon: An Interview with Hyam Yared

Hyam Yared was born in 1975 in Beirut. She has published three books of poetry and two novels: L’Armoire des ombres and Sous la tonnelle. Her books have received several awards, one of which were the France-Liban price, and the Phoenix 2009 award for her latest book. Her poems have been published in Lebanon, France, Britain, Portugal, and Italy. Yared talks to Beirut39 about the virtues of art on mentalities and against obscurantism.

How long have you been writing?

Since I was 12.

Who are your favorite poets?

Georges Schéhadé, Edmond Jabès, René Char, Rilke, Henri Michaux, G. Bataille. Emily Dickinson, Maria Tsvetaieva, and Jack Kerouac.

You prefer writing in French. Why?

Because I was raised in this tongue, even though Arabic is deeply rooted in my subconscious and daily life. I write in French with all the influences of Arabic in which I was born

If you could teach your three daughters one important lesson, what would it be?

To keep heading towards their freedom and respecting other’s circumstances, while keeping in mind that the most difficult thing is not to break free but to stay free and to avoid mutation of freedom into its illusion. Being true to themselves is one of many ways to freedom, and the cost to pay for it is high, specifically when interest and money erases ethics.

To borrow a few questions from the “Proust Questionnaire”:

What is your idea of happiness?

My idea of happiness is not to have any preconceived idea of happiness. It’s not about having an idea, but an attitude when it comes to approach life and people.

And your idea of misery?

Modern slavery

What is your favorite word?

To Be.

And your least favorite word?

Greediness.

And if you did not live in Beirut, where would you choose to live?

France has always tempted me for its laïc poltical tradition since the French Revolution, and for giving birth to human rights.

As a “Beiruti”, the Beirut39 Festival will be a different experience for you compared to other writers visiting the city for the first time. What are your expectations?

My expectations as a “Beiruti” is to get to know all 39 writers, to have the chance to converse with all of them and to show them my selfish perspective of this town, but most of all try to connect them with other “Beirutis”. We have to awaken people on the necessity of melting cultural pots, giving culture its place and priority as an answer to the political issues of these regions of the world where young nations are searching painfully to find their autonomy after the end of the first world war. Culture and art can lead us to freedom, or at least put us on its road. Walking on it is a matter of constant breaking free. Therefore only creativity as human beings, artists, and politicians can take place, can be defined, and can define humanity and societies. If art gets us free, than a free nation can be born.
